Advanced Micro Devices Inc. CEO Lisa Su projected the CPU market will grow more than 35% annually over the next five years, a significant acceleration driven by the buildout of artificial intelligence and data center capacity.
"The CPU market's growth is faster than any of us expected a year ago and will continue to expand," Su said. She noted that AMD expects the market to grow by more than 35% annually for the next five years, adding, "this is exactly where we are very strong."
The bullish forecast from AMD comes as the entire semiconductor industry experiences unprecedented demand, largely fueled by the AI boom. Competitor Nvidia Corp. recently reported a 211% increase in quarterly profit to $58.3 billion, with CEO Jensen Huang stating, "The build-out of AI factories — the largest infrastructure expansion in human history — is accelerating at extraordinary speed." While Nvidia dominates the market for GPU accelerators, CPUs remain a critical and growing component of data centers.
This rapid expansion is attracting intense competition. Major Nvidia customers like Google and Amazon are developing their own custom chips, and rivals Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices are also vying for a larger share of the AI hardware market. Despite Nvidia's shares gaining 20% this year, investors are weighing the durability of the AI buildout into 2027 and 2028, with analysts at eMarketer questioning the long-term growth narrative as the market shifts toward inference workloads. AMD's forecast signals its confidence in capturing a significant portion of the foundational CPU market amid this evolving and competitive landscape.
