Rokae Robotics (03752.HK) opened flat at HK$38 on the gray market ahead of its July 9 listing on the Hong Kong Main Board, according to Futu data.
The stock traded 351,900 shares with turnover of HK$13.04 million on Futu's platform. Data from PhillipMart showed a contrasting picture, with the stock opening 10.5% lower at HK$34 and last trading at HK$35, down 7.9% from the listing price, on volume of 126,000 shares and turnover of HK$4.67 million.
Gray market trading, conducted through broker platforms before official exchange listing, provides an early signal of demand from institutional and retail investors. The divergence between the two data sources reflects the decentralized nature of gray market activity, where prices can vary across platforms depending on order flow and participant mix. Such discrepancies are common in pre-IPO trading and often narrow once exchange trading begins, making the first day of official trading the definitive price discovery event.
The listing comes as Hong Kong's IPO market shows signs of recovery but remains short of blockbuster deals. Bank of America Securities cut its price target on Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (00388.HK) to HK$500, noting a strong first half for IPOs but a lack of mega listings. The first six months of 2024 saw improved IPO activity in Hong Kong compared with the prior year, though total proceeds remained well below the peaks of 2020 and 2021. Rokae Robotics' first-day performance will test whether investor appetite for new listings is gaining momentum after a prolonged downturn.
The gray market discrepancy means the stock's true demand signal will only emerge once exchange trading begins. Investors will watch the July 9 debut for a clearer read on institutional and retail interest in the robotics sector, with the stock's opening price and volume providing the first transparent market signal. A strong debut could encourage other technology companies to pursue Hong Kong listings in the second half of the year, while a weak start may reinforce caution among prospective issuers.
