Rigetti Computing Inc. (RGTI) reported first-quarter revenue tripled to $4.4 million on strong quantum hardware sales, though its operating loss widened as the company continues to invest heavily in research and development.
"Our Q1 results reflect the growing demand for quantum computing solutions," CEO Subodh Kulkarni said on the company's earnings call. "The launch of Cepheus-1-108Q marks a significant milestone in our technological advancements."
The quantum computing firm posted revenue of $4.4 million, a 193 percent increase from the same period last year and 6.5 percent above analysts' forecasts. Its loss of four cents per share met expectations. The higher revenue was driven by deliveries of its Novera quantum processing units (QPUs). However, operating expenses rose 23.5 percent year-over-year to $27.3 million, pushing the operating loss to $26 million.
After an 8.2 percent rally in regular trading, the stock gave back 1.85 percent in aftermarket hours, a sign of investor caution. The results highlight the cash-intensive race toward quantum advantage, a goal Rigetti believes is about three years away.
The quarter's main development was the general availability of its 108-qubit Cepheus-1 system, which customers can now access through Rigetti's own cloud service as well as platforms from Amazon's AWS, Microsoft Azure, and qBraid. The company is targeting a median two-qubit gate fidelity of 99.5 percent for the system later this year, a key metric for computational accuracy.
Rigetti's long-term strategy hinges on scaling its technology, with plans to invest up to $100 million in the United Kingdom to accelerate development. The company's roadmap targets a system with more than 1,000 qubits within three years, which it sees as the threshold for "quantum advantage" over classical computers for certain problems. Competitors in the quantum space include IonQ (IONQ) and D-Wave Quantum (QBTS).
The results underscore the pre-commercial nature of the quantum industry, where revenue growth is weighed against significant cash burn. Investors will watch for progress on the Cepheus-1 system's fidelity as a key milestone on its path to a 1,000-qubit machine.
