Reddit is deploying AI to fight AI-generated spam, blocking 23 million fake views each day as brands exploit chatbot search results.
Reddit's upgraded AI detection systems are blocking 23 million spam views daily and catching 25,000 suspicious posts each day, as the platform fights a surge in brands using generative engine optimization to manipulate chatbot recommendations.
"These systems examine suspicious signals from the moment an account is created, using large language models to find subtle patterns of coordinated activity that older filters could miss," a Reddit spokesperson said.
The company's automated tools now revoke nearly 2 million inauthentic votes per day. User exposure to spam fell about 20 percent between January and March 2026 compared with the prior three months, Reddit said, attributing the improvement to better enforcement rather than a decline in spam volume.
Reddit, with nearly 500 million weekly active users and more than 25 billion posts and comments, is racing to protect its most valuable asset — authentic human conversation — as AI-generated content threatens to erode trust. The company aims to reach 100 million daily U.S. users, a goal that depends on maintaining content quality as competitors like Meta Platforms and Snap invest heavily in their own AI tools.
Marketing agencies have already succeeded in getting newly created Reddit posts cited by ChatGPT, sometimes within a day, according to the company. The practice, known as generative engine optimization, or GEO, aims to influence chatbot answers rather than conventional search results. Some of those posts were later removed, but agencies continue seeking ways around Reddit's moderation systems.
Reddit relies on a combination of site administrators, volunteer community moderators, and user voting alongside its automated enforcement. Community moderators were responsible for more than half of all post and comment removals during the second half of 2025, the company said. New privacy-focused human verification methods are being introduced to distinguish real users from bots without compromising anonymity.
The stakes extend beyond user trust. Reddit's vast repository of human-generated conversations has become a valuable resource for training AI models, making content integrity a direct driver of the platform's monetization strategy. Meta Platforms reported $56.3 billion in quarterly revenue, up 33 percent year over year, driven partly by AI-powered features. Snap has introduced AI-assisted advertising tools including automated campaign setup and image-to-video generation.
Reddit shares, which trade under the ticker RDDT, face pressure from investors watching whether the company can sustain user growth while fending off AI-generated spam. The company's investment in safety technologies, transparency, and community-driven moderation is expected to be a key factor in both user retention and advertising revenue growth.
